The adoption of more environmentally responsible solutions in general and of degradability in plastics in particular, largely depends on the decisions of legislators and company decision makers. The ability of individuals to influence those decisions cannot be overstated as experience has clearly shown that both of these groups are more likely to act to satisfy their 'customers' than to act for altruistic reasons in the interests of the environment in the abstract.

In the case of contact with legislators or other lawmakers it may be helpful to draw their attention to this web site, and to the relevant part of the UK Marketing website which also incorporates a Briefing Note for UK and EU Legislators, the content of which is specifically drafted to assist with the key issues of concern to them.

In the case of companies, consumer and shareholder power can be immense. Most large companies in the UK make expansive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) claims but the truth is that very few indeed are driven by these considerations. Having approached many large companies, we have found that disturbingly often these statements are for PR purposes only and their content is confined to actions which are aimed at saving costs and where environmental benefits are only a consequence. This attitude must be challenged - especially by shareholders.
